Masoorachi Amti/ Brown Lentil Curry

Ingredients

Masoor dal 1 vati/cup, 4-5 garlic cloves (crushed), 2-3 red chilies, pinch of turmeric powder, ½ - 1 tbsp chili powder, 1-2 dried kokum halves, 1 tbsp goda masala or 1 tbsp coriander powder + ½ tbsp cumin powder, mustard seeds, 4 tbsp vegetable oil, coriander leaves for garnishing, jaggery and salt to taste.

How to make

  • Soak brown lentil/masoor dal in water for 15-20 minutes.
  • Drain the water.
  • In a pressure cooker, boil the masoor by adding two and half vati/cups of water and few drops of oil. Do not overcook.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds followed by red chilies.
  • Now add crushed garlic cloves and fry till you smell the fried garlic.
  • Add pinch of turmeric.
  • Now add cooked masoor.
  • Put water as required for desired consistency.
  • Stir well.
  • Bring it to boil.
  • Now add chili powder, goda masala or cumin powder + coriander powder, kokam halves, jaggery and salt.
  • Simmer for few minutes.
  • Turn off the heat.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with plain rice.
